last round of 30s

So I had a birthday this weekend. Fairly low-key event. Had dinner with some friends Friday night, worked on a video project, had dinner again on Saturday (we planned on going to The Pit, but they were closed for a private party, but we were lucky enough to get reservations at 18 Seaboard. 18 Seaboard is a pretty solid choice. What I’d call a good jack of all. But I still haven’t been to the The Pit I’ll have to figure out another reason to go. We went for a night cap to Big Boss for a few rounds of Bad Penny.

20081207-ncmapark-6-1And then Sunday. Got out early and Laura and I took the pooch to the NCMA’s Museum Park (which I always want to call the Art Park) where I took a few pictures.

Then a surprise round of karting with a few friends. Then a rush back to dinner with my parents. All in all and nice, weekend.

I have to say that as soon as I get the Sky2x site up. I’m revisiting this site. iWeb has it’s disadvantages and while the integration with Aperture is nice. The fact that you can really only publish from one file (which you can move from one computer to another) is a bit of a drag. It’s a little crazy to have to remember to copy over the iWeb file to your laptop. Or to be unable to post from

So I’ll be using some of Aperture’s publishing features coupled with a WordPress install starting early next year hopefully.

macro work

Right. So, I’m trying to get my act together on the design front after 3 years of working for myself and get a site launched. Well, beyond the joys of 99% content free information contact forms. Fine. The issue being that on the print work, the easy route is rendering JPEGs from InDesign or Illustrator and throwing them up on the site. Okay. “Throwing them up.” isn’t the best phrasing to go with.

boundary 2 detail

It seems the right solution is to shoot them. (Which is why I’m posting about it here.) This isn’t easy. Do I shoot it straight up? (If that’s the case am I just taking the long way to deliver, flat, boring, two dimensional images?) Or do I play with depth of field and try to make them interesting beyond just a simple design sample? I think it’s the later. If I throw in the towel and acknowledge that there’s nothing the same as holding a sample in your hands, pawing through the pages, seeing the way the piece comes together, etc. Then I get some creative license.

That’s good. And horrible all at the same time.

Anyhow, this is a cover for boundary 2 a journal published by Duke University Press. Ed. offices up at the University of Pittsburgh. Speaking of design, I need to get back to it. There’s another of these covers on the horizon.

Off to Atlanta tomorrow for the Doublecross challenge. Sadly, I’ll more than likely not bring the big camera so no action shots.

Hannibal Smith used to say: “I love it when a plan comes together.” Yeah. That fits

So after having FedEx and/or Light Impressions Direct help things out by breaking 16 out 17 sheets of glass for the frames—we’ve managed to get the show matted, framed and hung on the wall. Tonight should be blast. In addition to my stuff on the walls, we’ll have a local fashion designer showing off some goods and a video premier from Marty Casey.

We talked about music and I mentioned I’ve got a 2 day play list with a bunch of stuff on it. One band I mentioned was The Kills. If you can wear out an MP3 file, I think I’m going to find out. Turns out they are playing at The Metro on Friday, May 9. I fly out on Thursday. That. Sucks. I wonder what American would charge for a flight change.

Okay, last night was fantastic. Jen had the bright idea of going to the Tony Fitzpatrickopening at the Chicago Cultural Center. Needless to say I was blown away. We met Steven E. Gross (I’ll get to work with Steven in Mexico in conjunction with Mano Lista Workshops) at the reception and then hit up the Billy Goat for some local brew and a much needed double cheeseborger.
